Squirrels Eat My Flowers!

Squirrels (リス) が庭の花を食べてしまうんです。片っ端から。しかも徹底的に。何もしないと可愛いんですけど、、、頑張って育ててる植物食べられると、全く可愛く見えなくなってきます 。

一昨年はチューリップを庭に植えました。直接地植えしたものと、鉢植えにしたものがあったのですが、鉢植えは全滅。全部彼らに食べられました。地植えした方は、上からかごをかぶせていたので、無事にキレイに咲いてくれました。今年はそのかごを使ってバラを守っています。（ ↓ 写真参照）

全体を見るとこんな感じ。ちょっと間抜けですね、でもしばらく我慢です。今、別のリス対策を実行中です。それは、、、、、

これ！！　リスが苦手な味を花や球根にスプレーで吹きかけます。全て自然なもので出来ているのでリスに健康被害はないのですが、美味しくないのでそのうち近寄らなくなるらしいです。なんだか、かわいいパッケージです。うまくいくといいんですが、根気よく続けてみます。今年は、ばらの苗木も３本植えました。こちらも新しい芽やこれから咲く花を食べられないように、せっせとスプレーしてます。

植えたばかりの頃はワサビみたいに見えますが、10日間で新しい芽がこんなに成長しました。花が咲いたらまたブログにアップします。

こちらは、唯一生き残ったチューリップ。40本ちかくあったのが1本になってしまいました。外はまだ危険なので (リスは球根を容赦なく食べます)、球根が付いた状態で保護しました！なんだか、どのチューリップよりも愛おしく見えるのは気のせいでしょうか？強く残ってくれてありがとう。

一昨年に鉢植えの球根を食べられたとき、リスがほった穴に残して行ったものがあります。それは、ピーナッツの殻。ピーナッツになんか騙されません (笑)。

Two years ago, we bought some wire shelves at IKEA to protect tulip bulbs we planted in the ground from squirrels.  It actually worked and we were able to see beautiful flowers last spring.  We also planted some tulip bulbs in pots but all of them were eaten by squirrels...

It seems like they remember where they found the tulip bulbs before because they keep coming back to the same locations, dig holes and destroy the plants.  Why we did not have the wire shelves on the pots?  We did put some gardening tools to cover the top of the plants but the squirrels were smart enough to move them out of the way to reach the bulbs.

Now we have roses in our garden.  Roses don't have bulbs like tulips so we did not expect to see the same thing that happened to our tulips.  BUT, they ate the rose flowers and buds!!! We immediately covered the roses with the wire shelves.   We are also now spraying squirrels repellant.  Hoping this will work and we will be able to remove the wire shelves someday!
